No fewer than 52 inmates in custodial centres across Kano State are participating in the 2026 Senior School Certificate Examinations conducted by the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NABAIS).
The candidates, comprising 41 males and 11 females drawn from different custodial facilities in the state, have commenced the examinations as part of the Nigerian Correctional Service’s rehabilitation and reformation programme through education.
Spokesperson of the Kano State Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nasarawa, said in a statement that the Controller of Corrections, Yusuf Ahmad Lakpene, monitored the commencement of the examinations at designated centres.
Lakpene described the exercise as another milestone in the Service’s efforts to equip inmates with education and skills that will support their successful reintegration into society after serving their terms.
He urged the candidates to conduct themselves with discipline and uphold the highest standards of integrity throughout the examinations, stressing that education remains a vital tool for personal transformation and behavioural change.
The Controller also commended the Kano State Government for sponsoring the registration fees of all inmate candidates, describing the gesture as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to inclusive education and human capital development.
He reaffirmed the Nigerian Correctional Service’s resolve to expand educational opportunities across custodial centres, noting that such programmes remain central to the agency’s correctional mandate and efforts to prepare inmates for productive lives after incarceration.
