The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described recent remarks by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, against former Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as a sign of growing concern over the rising popularity of opposition politics in the state.
The party’s State Publicity Secretary, Chizy Enyi, made the assertion in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday while reacting to comments made by Wike during a media chat in Abuja.
According to Enyi, Wike’s repeated attacks on Amaechi contradict his claim that the opposition poses no electoral threat, arguing that such remarks reveal political anxiety rather than confidence.
He maintained that attempts to diminish Amaechi’s political relevance would not erase what he described as the former governor’s enduring contributions to governance, public service and national leadership.
The ADC spokesman also faulted Wike’s claim that Amaechi no longer possesses the political influence to determine electoral outcomes in Rivers State or the South-South, insisting that every election is shaped by prevailing political realities and ultimately decided by the electorate.
Enyi said Rivers people were more concerned about pressing issues such as economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure and the welfare of citizens than continued political exchanges among leaders.
He further argued that no individual could claim exclusive control over the political destiny of Rivers State, stressing that the state’s voters alone have the constitutional right to determine their leaders through the ballot.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to providing credible leadership and practical solutions to the state’s challenges, noting that it would continue to engage the electorate with issue-based campaigns rather than personal attacks.
The ADC also urged the FCT Minister to concentrate on his responsibilities in administering the nation’s capital, while allowing Rivers people to exercise their democratic rights without intimidation or undue political influence.
The party expressed confidence that the will of the people would ultimately determine the outcome of the 2027 general elections, insisting that democracy is decided at the ballot box and not through public declarations or political rhetoric.
