Tension has heightened in Osun State two days to Saturday’s governorship election following the killing of Ayegbo Oluwadele, nephew of the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Council, Hon. Busayo Oluwole Oke.
The APC Campaign Council spokesperson, Engr. Oluremi Omowaye, who confirmed the incident, condemned the killing and alleged that members of the Accord Party and supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke were responsible for the attack.
Omowaye said Oluwadele and another APC member, Taiwo Oluwadele, were shot around the family compound of Oluwole Oke in Esa-Oke.
He said Ayegbo Oluwadele died from the gunshot injuries, while Taiwo was receiving treatment in critical condition.
The APC spokesperson also alleged that three other party members in Atakumasa East Local Government Area — Idowu Laide, Ebuke Emmanuel and Adebiyi Ebenezer — were attacked.
Omowaye further claimed that about 40 APC members had been killed in various incidents across the state, alleging that authorities had failed to adequately address the violence.
He also referred to an earlier incident in Ilesha in which, according to him, five people were shot, with four killed and another receiving treatment at a teaching hospital.
Meanwhile, an APC chieftain, Kehinde Ayantunji, accused the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Wale Egbedun, of leading an attack on APC members in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
Ayantunji alleged that the APC House of Representatives candidate, Francis Eniade, was attacked in front of the Okuku Divisional Police Station, adding that some of his associates were macheted and others allegedly taken away.
The allegations could not be independently verified as of press time, while the parties and individuals accused in the claims were not immediately available for comment.
The latest incident comes amid heightened political tension in Osun ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
