NUT Staff Slumps, Dies in Abuja

A staff member of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Gwagwalada chapter, Mr Jessey A. Audu, has died after slumping on his way to work in Abuja.

The incident occurred on Tuesday around 11 a.m. near an army checkpoint in Gwagwalada Area Council. Audu was said to have suddenly collapsed into a drainage while walking to his office.

A former colleague, Ibrahim Adamu, said passersby noticed him lying in the drainage, bleeding from the nose, and alerted the police.

Police officers who arrived at the scene facilitated his evacuation to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead. His remains have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

The deceased, a cleaner with the FCT NUT office, was a native of Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State and resided in Unguwar Dodo, Gwagwalada. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Sources said Audu had appeared healthy and carried out his duties normally on Monday before returning home at about 4 p.m.

The FCT NUT Chairman, Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed the incident but declined further comment.

A police source in Gwagwalada also confirmed the death, adding that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause.
