An unidentified woman has been found dead in a hotel room along Clifford Street, Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening, September 7, 2026, after the woman and an unidentified male companion checked into Room 2 of the hotel for the night.
According to preliminary police findings, the hotel receptionist later noticed that the door to the room was open and assumed the occupants had checked out.
The receptionist reportedly entered the room to switch off the ceiling fan and, after turning on the light, discovered the woman lying unresponsive on the bed.
The hotel director, accompanied by the manager and receptionist on duty, subsequently reported the incident to the police the following day.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said investigators who visited the scene observed apparent marks of violence on the woman’s face and neck and documented the scene.
He said the body was evacuated to the General Hospital, Calabar, where she was confirmed dead and deposited at the mortuary pending further investigation and necessary medical or forensic examination.
“Some tablets were also recovered from the deceased’s handbag and secured as exhibits,” Akata said, adding that investigators had not established any link between the tablets and the cause of death.
The PPRO said the receptionist had been taken into police custody for questioning to assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the admission of the two guests and events preceding the discovery of the body.
He, however, stressed that the receptionist’s detention should not be construed as a determination of guilt.
Akata said the Command had launched efforts to identify and locate the unidentified male guest who was reportedly with the deceased.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, directed that the investigation be conducted professionally, objectively and in accordance with the law.
According to him, the investigation is expected to establish the identity of the deceased, the cause and circumstances of her death and the roles, if any, of persons connected with the incident.
The Commissioner assured that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with extant laws, while urging members of the public to avoid speculation and the circulation of unverified information capable of prejudicing the investigation or infringing on the rights of persons connected to the case.
The Command appealed to anyone with credible information that could assist in identifying the deceased or locating the male guest to contact the nearest police station or the Command through its established communication channels.
