The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 6 Headquarters, Calabar, AIG Rashid Bello Afegbua, has urged police officers in Akwa Ibom State to shun extortion, intimidation, exploitation and other forms of unprofessional conduct.
Afegbua gave the warning during a familiarisation visit to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Monday, September 14, 2026, in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for effective supervision of commands within the zone.
The AIG, who held an interactive session with officers and men of the command, said professionalism and respect for members of the public were essential to maintaining public confidence in the police.
He also warned officers to be mindful of actions that could expose the Force to garnishee orders, particularly in civil matters, stressing that the police should not bear the consequences of unprofessional conduct by individual officers.
Afegbua commended the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Mohammed Azare Baba, for his leadership of the command and urged officers to support the commissioner in maintaining security across the state.
He said he was committed to maintaining a productive working relationship between the Zone 6 headquarters and the Akwa Ibom Command, while assuring officers that issues affecting their operations would receive attention.
The AIG’s visit coincided with a two-day seminar on violence-free elections organised by the Akwa Ibom State Government in conjunction with security agencies, including the Department of State Services (DSS).
The seminar, which began on Tuesday and ends Wednesday, is themed “Promoting Free, Fair and Credible Election in Akwa Ibom State” and focuses on security and other issues surrounding the forthcoming elections.
Discussions at the seminar include the roles of the police and other security agencies during elections, the responsibilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the role of youths as ambassadors of peace.
The programme also addresses the use of the internet during elections, particularly the spread of misinformation, disinformation and false information.
Governor Umo Eno, represented by his deputy, delivered the keynote address at the opening of the seminar, which brought together government officials, security personnel and other stakeholders.
Afegbua welcomed the initiative, saying sustained engagement among government, security agencies and other stakeholders was necessary to address threats to peaceful elections in the state.
