Pelican Stars Football Club have secured promotion to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership after edging DreamStar Ladies FC 1-0 in the final of the 2026 NWFL Championship Playoffs at the U.J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar.
A dramatic stoppage-time goal by Blessing Ayila sealed victory for the Calabar-based side, completing a successful campaign that saw the former champions return to Nigeria’s top-flight women’s league after years in the second tier.
The week-long championship, held in Calabar from July 11 to 16, featured 16 clubs competing for two promotion slots. Backed by home supporters, Pelican Stars maintained a perfect record, winning all four matches.
The hosts opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Ikukuoma Queens, before defeating Gallant Queens 2-0 and Moje Queens 1-0 to finish top of their group with nine points.
In the final against DreamStar Ladies, both sides created chances in a closely contested encounter, but Ayila’s late strike proved decisive, sparking jubilant celebrations among the home fans.
Imo Strikers Queens claimed the second promotion ticket after defeating Rangers Women FC 5-4 on penalties following a goalless draw.
Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Etta Lawrence Itanya, described the promotion as a proud moment for the state, commending the players, coaches and management for their determination.
He also thanked Governor Bassey Otu and First Lady, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for their continued investment in sports development.
Chairman of Pelican Stars, Mrs. Sefia Francis Aribiah, attributed the club’s success to hard work, discipline and teamwork, while expressing appreciation to the state government, the Sports Commission, technical crew and supporters for their unwavering support.
