The National Population Commission (NPC) has launched a nationwide digital birth and death registration system with 4,011 technology-driven registration centres established across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
The Federal Commissioner representing Cross River State at the NPC, Barrister Alex Ukam, disclosed this during a media briefing in Calabar on Thursday.
Representing the Commission’s Chairman, Dr Aminu Ibrahim Yusuf, Ukam said the initiative, which became operational on July 1, 2026, is part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system.
He explained that the electronic platform is expected to make the registration of births and deaths faster, more accessible and more reliable through round-the-clock online services, digital certificates where applicable, and reduced paperwork.
According to him, the commission intends to expand the number of registration centres from the current 4,011 to 8,000 to bring services closer to communities across the country.
Ukam said the new system would provide a credible national database, improve demographic data for development planning and support interoperability with government agencies, including the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
He noted that the digital platform is in line with the Federal Government’s drive to build an integrated national identity management system and ensure every Nigerian has a legal identity from birth.
The commissioner further revealed that the NPC would review fees for some specialised administrative services under the new regime and is also preparing to introduce change-of-name services after the completion of the required legal framework.
