The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has inducted 216 graduates of its Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science into the Medical Laboratory Science profession, with a charge to uphold professionalism, ethical standards and lifelong learning.
Speaking during the 22nd Oath-Taking and Induction Ceremony held at the Godswill Akpabio International Conference Centre, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, described the inductees as “problem-solvers, innovators and nation-builders” who must uphold the ethics and integrity of the profession.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ekaete Enang, the Vice Chancellor reminded the new professionals that graduation marked the beginning, not the end, of learning, urging them to continually update their knowledge and skills to keep pace with advances in healthcare and technology.
He also urged them to remain grateful to their parents, lecturers and the university for their support and sacrifices, while charging them to remain worthy ambassadors of UNICAL, renowned for academic excellence.
The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Ngim Ngim, congratulated the graduates on their successful induction, commending their resilience throughout their academic training. He urged them to uphold ethical standards, work collaboratively within the healthcare system and contribute to the growth of their alma mater.
In the same vein, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, Prof. Iya Eze Bassey, charged the inductees to embrace integrity, innovation and continuous professional development while placing patients’ welfare at the centre of their practice.
Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN), Dr. Donald Ibe Ofili, represented by Mrs. Nnenaya Nzeaku, commended the University of Calabar for producing competent medical laboratory scientists and encouraged the institution to continue expanding its facilities and manpower.
He advised the newly inducted professionals to complete their mandatory internship before proceeding for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), maintain the highest ethical standards and continually improve their professional competencies.
Delivering the induction lecture titled “Quality Medical Laboratory Services in an Era of Rapid Innovations in Science and Technology and Challenging Economy,” Prof. Paul Inyang-Etoh urged the graduates to embrace innovation, digital technologies and quality management systems while adopting cost-effective laboratory practices to enhance healthcare delivery.
Chairman of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science Alumni Association, Dr. Aniekan-Augusta Eyo, welcomed the inductees into the association and encouraged them to remain connected to their alma mater through mentorship and selfless service.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Cross River State Branch, Mr. Dennis Ekpo, urged the new professionals to uphold integrity, pursue lifelong learning and actively contribute to the advancement of the profession.
Speaking on behalf of the graduating class, the overall best graduating student and valedictorian, Achor Ajuma Victoria, expressed gratitude to God, the university management, lecturers, parents and colleagues for their support, pledging that the Class of 2025 would uphold the values of the University of Calabar and distinguish themselves as worthy ambassadors wherever they serve.
