The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme, 39, for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 under the guise of securing employment for her children at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH.
The suspect was arrested by operatives attached to the Uwanse Division in Calabar South following a petition by Mrs. Edemawan Samuel, 45, who accused him of falsely presenting himself as a medical practitioner.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the suspect allegedly collected the money after promising to secure jobs for the complainant’s children at UCTH.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect used the false representation to obtain the money by deception.
The command disclosed that investigators recovered exhibits believed to be linked to the alleged offences, while the suspect remains in custody.
Akata said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case, including whether there were other victims or accomplices.
He added that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations if sufficient evidence is found.
The police assured residents that investigations are ongoing and urged anyone who may have had similar dealings with the suspect to come forward with useful information.
