A former youth president of Ogboinbiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has been killed following a violent clash that triggered fresh security concerns.
In response, the Bayelsa State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the community, while police authorities deployed operatives to restore order.
Residents were seen fleeing the area in the aftermath of the violence, seeking safety in neighbouring communities.
The State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. Ebiuwou Koku Obiyai, announced the curfew in a statement on Tuesday, describing it as part of measures to safeguard public peace.
She said the restriction, which took effect from Tuesday, April 28, 2026, runs daily from 6pm to 6am until further notice.
Obiyai warned that violators would be treated as threats to public peace and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Police Command confirmed it has brought the situation under control and intensified security presence in the area.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammad, said adequate personnel, including tactical teams and operational assets, had been deployed to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
“In collaboration with other security agencies, normalcy has been restored, while continuous patrols are ongoing to forestall escalation,” he said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, urged residents of Ogboinbiri and neighbouring communities to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid spreading unverified information capable of heightening tension.
The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and called on the public to report suspicious activities.
