The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 54-year-old man, Godwin Okoko, in connection with the alleged murder of an official of the Traffic Management and Regulatory Agency (TRAMA) in Calabar.
The incident occurred on Monday morning at the Marian Hill area of the city during a traffic enforcement operation involving a commercial mini-bus driver alleged to have violated traffic regulations.
Police said the situation turned violent when TRAMA officials were allegedly attacked while carrying out their lawful duties.
According to the Command, three TRAMA officials sustained injuries during the incident. One of the officials reportedly suffered a severe chest injury after being stabbed with a screwdriver.
The injured official was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
Two other injured officials are currently receiving treatment and are said to be responding positively.
Police operatives were said to have responded swiftly to a distress call from the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The suspect is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Calabar, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police Command condemned the attack, describing violence against public officers carrying out lawful responsibilities as unacceptable.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Command assured residents that justice would be diligently pursued in accordance with the law.
