The Cross River State Government has approved ₦355.31 million for the construction of an administrative and laboratory complex, including staff accommodation, for the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) outstation at Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area.
The approval was given at the State Executive Council meeting following a memorandum presented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Irrigation Development, Johnson Ebokpo.
The facility is expected to support research into oil palm production, including improved varieties, disease management, nursery development and modern farming practices.
Governor Bassey Otu said investment in agricultural research was necessary to improve productivity and support farmers and agribusinesses in the state.
He said the NIFOR facility would provide a platform for research and the dissemination of technologies to farmers, particularly in oil palm production.
According to the state government, the project will also facilitate collaboration between NIFOR, universities, research institutions and private agribusinesses on issues including climate-smart agriculture, mechanisation and crop protection.
The complex is expected to support the production and distribution of improved oil palm seedlings and provide technical assistance to farmers and commercial investors.
The government also said the facility would provide opportunities for agricultural extension services, vocational training and youth participation in agribusiness.
The project is part of the state government’s broader agricultural development programme and is expected to be implemented at the NIFOR outstation in Creek Town.
