Seventeen families of police officers who died while serving in Cross River State have received ₦13,753,885.36 in Group Life Assurance benefits.
The cheques were presented to the beneficiaries on Wednesday at the Cross River State Police Command headquarters in Calabar.
The payment was approved by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and presented by the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue.
The beneficiaries were families of deceased personnel of the Cross River State Police Command who were covered under the Nigeria Police Force’s Group Life Assurance scheme.
Ordue said the payment was intended to provide financial assistance to families following the death of their relatives in service.
He acknowledged that the financial benefit could not compensate for the loss of their loved ones but said it would provide some support to the bereaved families.
The commissioner urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the funds.
He also assured the families of the command’s continued support while calling on serving officers to remain professional in the discharge of their duties.
The presentation formed part of the implementation of welfare provisions for police personnel and their families under the Group Life Assurance scheme.
The commissioner also acknowledged the sacrifices of the deceased officers and their families.
The Cross River Police Command said the beneficiaries were drawn from families of personnel who served in the state before their deaths.
The command did not disclose the identities or individual amounts paid to the 17 beneficiaries.
