A former secretary of th defunct All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP, Mr Bobby Effiom Ekpenyong has stated that the upcoming general election in Nigeria will again witness voter apathy.
He said Nigerians are generally sceptical about elections because they do not seem to have faith in it.
He spoke to journalists in Calabar, saying what can address the situation is good governance and sustained engagement with citizens.
According to Ekpenyong, who is also director-general of Neighbour 2 Neighbour Network (N2N), mobilising for Governor Bassey Otu’s return for second term, these are critical to restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
Ekpenyong stressed that citizens would show greater interest in politics and elections when governments deliver on their promises and remained responsive to their needs.
“When government is responsive, when government is delivering to their purposes, and people can see, touch and feel the government, they will have interest to participate,” he said.
Ekpenyong said citizens needed to be adequately informed about government policies and programmes, while also having opportunities to communicate their concerns to those in authority.
