PDP Crisis Deepens As Cross River Chairman Ikem Quits

By BANNERNEWS Reporter, Calabar

The Cross River State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Vena Ikem, has resigned with immediate effect, citing internal crises, leadership disagreements and a lack of clear direction within the party.

In his resignation letter, which was circulated to some media outlets, Ikem said the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions had made it increasingly difficult for him to discharge his responsibilities as state chairman.

He said the party was grappling with a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, warning that the situation had weakened its effectiveness and could undermine the sacrifices and aspirations of loyal members.

Ikem described his decision to quit as difficult but necessary, saying his continued stay in office had become untenable under circumstances that challenged the principles, unity and purpose of the party.

He, however, expressed gratitude to party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him during his five-year tenure.

He specifically acknowledged the support of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, as well as his kinsmen from Obudu and other PDP supporters across the state.

Ikem said his resignation followed deep reflection on the party’s situation and his conviction that a new direction was necessary.

He added that he remained committed to the progress and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.

When contacted by BANNERNEWS to clarify whether he was considering joining the ruling party, Ikem said he had yet to make such a decision.

Meanwhile, a political analyst, Joshua Akpan, alleged that the PDP governorship candidate had sidelined Ikem during consultation visits ahead of the party’s campaign.

Akpan said the reported disagreement could further complicate the party’s efforts to strengthen its position in the state ahead of the elections.
