The Senate of University of Abuja has approved the expulsion of 28 students over various disciplinary offences.

The decision was reached at the institution’s 191st Regular Meeting held on Thursday, January 29, 2016, following consideration of the report and recommendations of the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).

Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the affected students were found culpable of serious violations of university regulations.

The offences include threat to life and assault, examination malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, possession and use of hard drugs, falsification of ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university portal for admission, and failure to appear before the disciplinary committee despite repeated invitations.

In addition to the expulsions, Senate approved the withdrawal of certificates issued to 15 former students who ignored multiple invitations from the committee.

The statement further revealed that nine students were exonerated after investigations, while 33 others received warnings for infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering and fighting.

Vice-Chancellor and Chairman of Senate, Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining discipline and safeguarding academic standards.

“The academic integrity of the University is sacrosanct, and we are determined that anyone who violates it will be appropriately sanctioned. Our goal is not only to enforce discipline but also to guide our students towards responsible citizenship and academic excellence,” he said.

Fawehinmi commended the Student Disciplinary Committee for its thorough handling of the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly, assuring that the university would continue to strengthen engagement, counselling and orientation programmes to curb misconduct.
