The Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) has accused operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) of killing one of its members, Tukur Alhaji Salihu, in Birnin Kebbi township, Kebbi State.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 7, 2026. Eyewitnesses said Salihu, 45, was shot three times when Customs officials attempted to stop the vehicle in which he was travelling.
He was rushed to a hospital in Birnin Kebbi for treatment but was confirmed dead around midnight, according to sources.
Reacting to the incident, the Kebbi State Secretary of AMDON, Shehu Yusuf Bunza, said the association was shocked and outraged by what he described as the brutal killing of its member.
Bunza said the shooting occurred along the Nagari College–Illela Yari axis of Birnin Kebbi, warning that the incident underscored growing concerns over alleged extra-judicial killings and human rights abuses in the state and the country.
He described the action as a deliberate and unwarranted use of force that had instilled fear and panic among AMDON members and the wider Kebbi community, noting that the incident took place in broad daylight.
According to him, the association was particularly disturbed that the operatives allegedly acted with impunity, showing little regard for the sanctity of human life.
AMDON condemned the killing and called on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The association also urged the Kebbi State Government and the Nigeria Customs Service to investigate the incident, ensure justice for the deceased, and provide adequate compensation and support to his family, while appealing to the National Human Rights Commission, the Nigerian Bar Association and other rights groups to intervene.
As of press time, neither the Nigeria Customs Service nor the police had issued an official statement. Efforts to obtain a reaction from the Customs Area Command were unsuccessful, as the Assistant Public Relations Officer promised to respond but had yet to do so.
