The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has enrolled at Northwest University, Kano, to pursue a degree in Law, fulfilling what he described as a lifelong academic ambition.
Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, disclosed this after attending lectures at the institution, saying he had always desired to study law despite already holding advanced academic qualifications.
He explained that the programme marks his third bachelor’s degree, having earlier studied Economics at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, before proceeding to other postgraduate studies.
Describing himself as most fulfilled in academic settings, the Emir said the law remains central to every aspect of human interaction, from family life and contracts to governance and social order.
He dismissed suggestions that his decision was influenced by past court cases, stressing that the choice was purely personal and intellectual.
According to him, he chose Northwest University because it offered him admission and is owned by Kano State, noting that Nigerian institutions and lecturers are often unfairly undervalued.
On balancing his academic pursuit with royal responsibilities, Sanusi said he attends classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, while dedicating Mondays and Fridays to official duties, adding that he also joins lectures virtually when necessary.
Reflecting on his classroom experience, the Emir praised the discipline and seriousness of the students, saying he had enjoyed returning to a structured learning environment.
He urged Nigerians to embrace lifelong learning and called on government and the private sector to invest more in education infrastructure, stressing that human capital development remains the country’s greatest asset.
