Former Head of State and President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is now to be formally addressed as Late Dr. Muhammadu Buhari following the posthumous conferment of an honorary doctorate degree on him.
Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, has awarded the late Nigerian leader an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Political Science in recognition of his contributions to national development and public service.
The approval for the award was given by the university’s Governing Council and was announced during the institution’s 14th convocation ceremony, held on Saturday in Katsina State.
University authorities said the honour was bestowed in acknowledgment of Buhari’s lifelong commitment to Nigeria’s political evolution, leadership in governance, and dedication to national unity and development.
They noted that his legacy, particularly his contributions to the growth and strengthening of Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, made him deserving of the posthumous recognition.
According to the institution, the decision to honour the late president was aimed at reflecting on his strides in governance and nation-building, while providing a source of inspiration for present and future leaders.
Speaking on behalf of other honorary award recipients, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Ahmad Rufa’i, urged graduating students to embrace patriotism, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.
Ambassador Rufa’i encouraged the graduates to deploy their education toward building an inclusive society founded on peace, dignity, and equal opportunity.
The convocation ceremony also witnessed the award of degrees and diplomas to graduating students across various faculties, alongside the conferment of other honorary distinctions on individuals recognised for their contributions to national development.
