A provincial pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, has been appointed Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.
Governor Douye Diri announced the appointment on Tuesday in Yenagoa, the state capital. The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has since screened and approved Akpe’s nomination in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Akpe, who until his appointment served as Chief of Government House, was unveiled during plenary after Speaker Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere read the governor’s letter. He was asked to take a bow and leave in keeping with legislative tradition, having previously served as Majority Leader of the Assembly.
A seasoned educator and political strategist, Akpe holds a PhD in Educational Management and has held several key legislative and executive positions, including Deputy Chief of Staff.
Before joining partisan politics, he built a career in the Bayelsa State civil service. He served as Head of Administration in the Office of the Deputy Governor (2006–2007) and later as Commissioner in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service Commission (2008–2011).
Akpe hails from Ebedebiri in Sagbama Local Government Area, while both he and Governor Diri trace their maternal roots to Ayamasa community in Ekeremor Local Government Area.
He succeeds the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who died in office on December 11, 2025, and was buried on January 30, 2026.
