The Zamfara State Government has donated N10 million and 100 bags of assorted grains to families of four villagers killed during a bandit attack in Gwargwabe village, Bungudu Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were killed on Thursday evening when armed bandits invaded Gwargwabe village in Nahuce District, Bungudu Emirate, setting houses and food stores ablaze.
Those killed were three men and one woman, while several livestock were also destroyed during the attack.
A statement issued by the Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Shehu Adamu Gusau, said the bandits carried out the attack as punishment for the villagers’ refusal to pay illegal levies imposed on them.
According to the statement, the District Head of Nahuce, Alhaji Sulaiman Marafa, confirmed that the community had collectively resisted the extortion demands in a bid to protect themselves.
The incident occurred barely two days after an earlier attack on the same village, during which three residents were killed, bringing the death toll in the area to seven within the week.
Governor Dauda Lawal attended the funeral prayers and burial of the latest victims on Friday, where he sympathised with the affected families and the entire community.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Mani Malam Mummuni, urged residents to remain steadfast and united, describing the tragedy as a painful test while assuring them of government support.
He also announced the establishment of a military base in Gwargwabe to deter further attacks and called on residents to cooperate fully with security agencies to restore peace in the area.
