A group of Nigerian students studying abroad under the platform of Scholars in Diaspora (SiD) has raised N20 million towards the purchase of the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial nomination form for Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group disclosed this in a statement issued by its representative, Effiong Bassey, after a meeting held on Saturday in Coventry, West Midlands, United Kingdom.
According to the statement, members contributed a total of N22.1 million voluntarily, with N20 million set aside for Ekpenyong’s nomination form for Cross River South Senatorial District.
The balance of the funds, alongside additional donations still being received, will be channelled into educational support for vulnerable children.
SiD members, drawn from across the United Kingdom and other countries, are beneficiaries of scholarship programmes initiated by the senator.
The group said the donation reflected appreciation for Ekpenyong’s support for education and youth development, noting that it had also carried out interventions such as distribution of learning materials and payment of school fees for underprivileged students.
Reacting to the gesture, Senator Ekpenyong said he was surprised by the support and thanked the students for the donation.
He said he had always focused on giving back to society and did not expect such a contribution in return, especially from students benefiting from scholarship schemes.
Ekpenyong also restated his commitment to education, youth empowerment and continued representation of Cross River South in the National Assembly.
