The National President of the Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers of Nigeria, Dr. Isah Aliyu, has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to reopen the Tsamiya border, describing it as a major relief for traders of perishable goods.
Aliyu said the Tsamiya corridor had long served as a vital trade route for Nigeria, Benin Republic and other neighbouring countries, particularly for onion produce transported from Aliero and other parts of Kebbi State.
He explained that the prolonged border closure had led to sharp price increases and heavy losses, as onions and other perishable commodities could not be moved across borders on time.
“Every hour of delay in moving perishable goods results in losses. The closure has affected traders, farmers and consumers,” he said.
Aliyu urged the government to ensure that the reopening is properly managed, with controlled and monitored measures that would boost revenue for both the state and the Nigeria Customs Service.
He added that effective border management would also reduce insecurity by discouraging illegal trade routes often exploited by criminal elements.
The onion traders’ leader expressed optimism that the reopening would stabilise prices, reduce post-harvest losses and restore confidence among producers and marketers.
He further called for sustained collaboration between Customs, security agencies and traders to ensure smooth movement of goods without undermining national security.
According to him, the reopening of the Tsamiya border would not only revive regional trade but also strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural export potential, particularly in onion production.
