The Ondo State Police Command has paraded 10 suspected criminals, including alleged members of an interstate armed robbery syndicate and suspects linked to a violent land dispute, while the Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a man over the alleged murder of his friend.
Addressing journalists in Akure on Monday, Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, said three suspected members of a notorious armed robbery syndicate were arrested during an intelligence-led operation.
The suspects, identified as Promise Daniel, 34, Ifeanyi Umahi, 29, and Adaramoye Abayomi, 37, were allegedly involved in a string of armed robbery attacks across Ondo and Lagos states. They were intercepted while travelling in a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 SUV in connection with a robbery case reported at Iju Division in Akure North Local Government Area.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, a magazine loaded with 18 rounds of live ammunition, an English-made Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition, an axe and an iron cutter from the suspects.
Ohagwu said the suspects confessed to owning the recovered weapons and provided useful information that is helping investigators track other fleeing members of the gang.
In a separate operation, the command arrested seven suspects over a violent land dispute in Kajola, Ore, and recovered two locally made guns, two cutlasses, a bag containing suspected charms, a container labelled acid and other dangerous weapons.
The police commissioner said the dispute, which is already before a High Court in Ore, could have escalated into a deadly clash, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands.
Meanwhile, in Adamawa State, police arrested Abubakar Musa of Damilu Quarters, Yola North, over the alleged murder of his friend, Nathaniel Yusuf, 30, of Jambutu Ward.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, said the arrest followed a complaint by the deceased’s sister, Grace Yusuf, who alleged that her brother was attacked by the suspect.
He said detectives rushed to the scene, rescued the victim and took him to the Yola Specialist Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
According to the police, preliminary investigations showed the victim sustained severe injuries, including fractures to both legs, his right hand and head, after he was allegedly beaten with a stick by the suspect.
Nguroje said the Commissioner of Police, Kabiru Umar Hassan, had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to take over the case for a thorough investigation and prosecution, while urging residents to continue supporting the police with credible information.
