The United Kingdom and Nigeria have signed three landmark agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation on migration management, border security and trade relations.
The agreements were concluded during the State Visit of President Bola Tinubu, reflecting both countries’ commitment to building a transparent and mutually beneficial migration framework while expanding economic opportunities.
They include two Memoranda of Understanding and a Statement of Intent, signed by UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi, and Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
Under the new arrangements, Nigeria will recognise UK Letters as valid identification for administrative processes, a move expected to streamline migration procedures and enhance trust between both nations.
Officials said the development reflects efforts to simplify shared systems while maintaining fairness, transparency and adherence to the rule of law in migration matters.
The agreements also provide for enhanced cooperation between both countries in combating criminal networks exploiting visa channels.
A joint fraud fusion cell will be established to facilitate intelligence sharing among law enforcement agencies, banks, technology firms and telecommunications companies in both countries.
The initiative is expected to target romance fraud, investment scams and cryptocurrency-related crimes, which have affected individuals and economies in both nations.
According to officials, existing collaboration between Nigerian and UK authorities has already led to over 400 arrests and the seizure of about £7.5 million in proceeds linked to fraudulent activities.
In addition, the Statement of Intent on business visas is designed to ease trade barriers and open new opportunities for businesses in both countries, thereby promoting investment flows and job creation.
Nigeria’s Interior Minister, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, described the partnership as a strategic step towards building a more efficient migration system that supports economic growth and development.
He expressed optimism that the arrangement could serve as a model for future bilateral agreements between nations seeking balanced migration and trade relations.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the agreements underscore a shared commitment to managing migration responsibly while unlocking economic benefits for both countries.
Also speaking, UK Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Alex Norris, said the agreements would strengthen efforts to curb irregular migration and ensure that immigration systems are not abused.
UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, noted that the partnership reflects mutual respect and shared priorities, particularly in addressing issues of migration, security and economic cooperation.
