A High Court in Calabar has ordered the Nigeria Police to relocate a vehicle seized from a Cameroonian youth leader to the Cross River State Judiciary Headquarters, pending the determination of a fundamental rights suit.
The order was issued by Justice Theresa Agom of High Court 13 in Suit No. HC/146F/2025, with the matter adjourned to March 31, 2026, for judgment.
The applicant, Manghe Romeo Etta, a youth senator representing Manyu Division in South West Cameroon, is seeking N200 million in damages over alleged unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental rights.
Listed as respondents are the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 6, Calabar, and five others.
Counsel to the applicant, Armstrong T. Achu Esq., had urged the court to compel the الشرطة to produce the disputed vehicle — a BMW X1 — before the court to ensure its preservation.
Ruling on the application, Justice Agom directed the respondents to move the vehicle to the court premises and deposit it in the custody of court authorities.
The court further ordered that the original documents of the vehicle, along with its keys, be submitted for safekeeping pending the outcome of the case.
Speaking after proceedings, Achu insisted that the vehicle was legitimately acquired and that his client’s arrest and detention were unlawful.
“We bought the vehicle genuinely. There was no evidence presented to suggest it was stolen,” he said.
He urged the police to comply fully with the court order, warning against any development that could strain relations between Nigeria and Cameroon.
