Naval officers of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT have arrested three Ghanaian fishermen for attempting to stow away on a foreign vessel in Lagos.
The suspects—Armah Peter, 26; Amisah Daniel, 22; and Amoh Michael, 25—were apprehended aboard MT Anatolia after the vessel berthed at the Dangote Refinery terminal.
The trio reportedly boarded the ship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, and hid in its rudder compartment for five days before being discovered.
They told interrogators they intended to travel illegally to Spain or Canada in search of better opportunities, believing they had reached their destination when the vessel docked in Lagos.
“We thought we had arrived, not knowing the ship only stopped in Nigeria to discharge cargo,” they admitted.
Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore A. Adams-Aliyu, said the stowaways were discovered on March 28, 2026, concealed in the vessel’s rudder compartment at the Dangote terminal.
He said they were safely evacuated and taken to the naval base for preliminary investigation and profiling.
According to him, findings showed the suspects had lived in Abidjan for about a year, working as fishermen, before sneaking onto the vessel with the aid of a canoe.
Adams-Aliyu warned against illegal migration through maritime routes, urging youths across West Africa to desist from such dangerous ventures, and reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain.
