The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 29-year-old man, Saviour Otu Adim, over the alleged killing of his six-year-old stepdaughter, Goodness Ekpo Okon, in Bakassi Local Government Area.
The suspect was arrested after the incident was reported to the police on Friday by Mrs Itoro Udofia, who alleged that Adim assaulted the child, leading to her death.
The police said preliminary investigation indicated that the suspect had allegedly accused the child of being a witch.
Adim is currently being held in police custody as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
The remains of the girl have been deposited at a mortuary for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Calabar, for further investigation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday.
The command urged members of the public to protect children and report suspected cases of child abuse to the authorities.
It also advised the public against spreading unverified information or resorting to self-help while the investigation continues.
