The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State says it has room for former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Vena Ikem, following his resignation from the opposition party.
The state APC chairman, Chris Eta, disclosed this in Calabar while responding to journalists’ questions on whether his party was in talks with Ikem.
Eta said the APC was not negotiating with Ikem but had enough space for anyone willing to join the ruling party.
“We’re not exactly in talks with Mr Ikem, though, but our party is bigger and still has enough space for anybody, including himself, to come in,” he said.
Ikem resigned as Cross River PDP chairman last week, citing internal divisions and a lack of clear direction within the party.
In his resignation letter, he said he had found it increasingly difficult to reconcile his responsibilities as chairman with internal dynamics and divergent positions that, in his view, were weakening the party’s unity and effectiveness.
He also described the PDP as grappling with a “crisis of direction and leadership coherence.”
Using the APC’s broom symbol to illustrate his point, Eta said the party was open to accommodating new members.
“Our symbol is the broom. And you know, when you sweep with the broom, you could see sticks of the broom left on the floor. You’ll naturally want to pick them into the whole bunch,” he said.
He declined to disclose whether Ikem had contacted the APC over a possible defection.
Eta urged interested politicians and other Nigerians to join the ruling party.
