Coup Allegation Against Sylva Spurious, Unverified — Group

The Centre for Justice and Equity (CJE) has dismissed allegations linking former Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, to an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the claims as spurious and unverified.

In a statement signed by Chief Igoni William, the group expressed concern that some online media platforms published the allegations without credible evidence or official confirmation.

CJE noted that the reports were circulated without verification from the Defence Headquarters or any recognised security agency, raising questions about the credibility and timing of the claims.

“It is a fundamental principle of justice and democratic governance that allegations must be verified, officially communicated and subjected to due process, rather than advanced through speculative or selective leaks,” the statement said.

The group further expressed worry over what it described as a growing pattern of recurring allegations against Sylva, warning that such claims could be part of coordinated attempts to influence public opinion.

According to CJE, certain political actors within Bayelsa State appear to be amplifying anti-Sylva narratives for partisan interests, thereby politicising sensitive national security issues.

It warned that the trend was capable of undermining public trust and democratic stability if left unchecked.

The organisation maintained that there was no credible or verifiable evidence linking Sylva to any coup plot or unconstitutional activity, adding that his public service record reflected commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law.

CJE called on security agencies to clarify the status of any investigation through official channels, urged media organisations to uphold professional verification standards, and advised political actors to refrain from exploiting national security matters for political battles.
