Youths in Ikom LGA of Cross River State have dismantled a checkpoint manned by policemen at the Ikom Border Post on the way to the Mfum international border.
The youths were expressing their anger when a police officer at the checkpoint reportedly manhandled a driver for not yielding to pressures to bribe them.
According to one of the youths, Samuel Erim, he said it was very unfair for the officer to assault the driver.
According to him, there has been extortions by personnel at many checkpoints on the international route.
PPRO of the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata said they were aware of the reported incident, describing the allegation of assault as unprofessional conduct by a police officer.
In a statement, be said, “The officer involved has been recalled to his base and is currently facing disciplinary proceedings in line with established police procedures.
“The Command reiterates that unprofessional conduct and abuse of members of the public will not be tolerated, and assures the public that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the proceedings.”
Akata said they the Command remains committed to professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.
