Ahead of World Press Freedom Day, the Deputy Press Secretary to Governor Bassey Otu, Mr. Edem Darlington, in collaboration with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Cross River State Council, on Thursday led a delegation to visit ailing veteran journalist, Mr. Peter Okon, celebrating his resilience and recovery.
Okon, a retired broadcaster with the Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), has been recuperating after being knocked down by a driver nearly two years ago. His condition, once critical, has improved significantly, drawing commendation during the visit.
Darlington expressed joy at his recovery, recalling their last encounter at the hospital. “It is good to see you strong and smiling again. Today calls for gratitude to God. The preservation of your life shows there are still greater things ahead,” he said.
He noted the visit was not only to celebrate Okon’s progress but to reaffirm professional solidarity, stressing that retired journalists must not be forgotten despite challenges of ageing and isolation.

“We are here to remind you that you are not forgotten. You still have much to offer,” he added.
NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Archibong Bassey, described Okon as “a soldier winning the battle,” expressing optimism about his full recovery and assuring him of continued support from colleagues.
Also, Mr. Clement James of the Correspondents Chapel urged him to remain hopeful, noting that setbacks are not the end of life’s journey.
Responding, Okon thanked the delegation for their support, saying the visits, calls and messages had strengthened his resolve. He added that such gestures reinforce unity within the profession and assure journalists they are valued.
The visit featured prayers and the presentation of financial support to aid his continued recovery.
