The Edo State House of Assembly has unanimously approved the State Police Bill transmitted by the National Assembly, while the Cross River State House of Assembly is expected to consider the legislation when it resumes plenary on September 29, 2026.
The National Assembly had transmitted the bill, seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to provide for the establishment of State Police Services and related matters, to state Houses of Assembly for consideration.
While the Edo lawmakers approved the bill on Wednesday, September 23, the Cross River Assembly is currently on recess and is yet to receive the legislation, according to sources close to the House.
Aides to the Cross River Speaker, Elvert Ayamben, said the bill would be considered immediately the Assembly resumes plenary on September 29.
The Edo bill was considered during plenary following a letter dated September 16, 2026, addressed to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Prince Yekeni Idaiye.
The Majority Leader and member representing Esan South East Constituency, Osezua Sunday Ojiezele, presented the bill and highlighted its importance.
Other lawmakers, including Addeh Isibor, Esan North East; Donald Okogbe, Akoko-Edo II; and Richard Edosa, Oredo West, spoke in support of the legislation.
Following its unanimous approval, the Edo Speaker directed that clean copies of the bill be forwarded to the Clerk of the National Assembly in Abuja.
The proposed constitutional amendment is part of the process for establishing State Police Services across the country.
