Two suspected gunrunners have been arrested along the Wukari–Ikyaior Road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.
The suspects were apprehended on Thursday during a routine stop-and-search operation by troops of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), stationed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Wukari.
Military sources said the troops intercepted the duo while riding on a motorcycle and discovered 444 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition in their possession.
Items recovered from the suspects include ₦29,200 in cash, two mobile phones, ATM cards, charms, personal belongings, and the motorcycle used for transportation.
The suspects were identified as Wisdom Soomga, 32, from Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, and Elisha Danladi, 38, a native of Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.
Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Brigade, Lieutenant Umar Mohammed, confirmed the arrest in Jalingo, stating that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms movement in the state.
He added that the suspects and the recovered items are currently in military custody for further investigation to determine the source and intended use of the ammunition.
Mohammed reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Army to sustaining operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Taraba State.
Also speaking, the Commander, 6 Brigade Nigerian Army/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, commended the troops for their vigilance and swift response.
He noted that their actions align with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff to decisively tackle insecurity and rid the state of criminal activities.
