The Senator who represented Cross River State Southern Senatorial District in the 8th and 9th Senate, Gershom H. Bassey has listed arrays of reasons why he resigned from the former ruling People’s Democratic Party, PDP. He submitted his resignation letter dated 12 March 2026 to his Ward 9, in Calabar South LGA yesterday.
The former gubernatorial aspirant in 2023, said that it was with a heavy heart that he had to leave the party, which he said he helped to found and had invested enormous resources and unwavering commitment to make it formidable.
Amongst the reasons that have forced Gershom Bassey to resign include what he called “persistent internal crisis, deep divisions and unresolved conflicts that have plagued the party in recent times”.
He said these have made it increasingly difficult to remain optimistic about its future.
“The continued split within the party structures has weakened its unity and eroded the values upon which it was originally founded.
“The most recent crisis has unfortunately made it clear that the party was drifting further away from its ideals that once bound us together.
“What makes this even more painful is the apparent unwillingness of party elders and leaders to genuinely fight for its soul and restore the discipline, unity and vision that once defined it ”
Bassey said the ugly developments in the once great institution of democratic experiment, which embodies the hopes and aspirations of millions of Nigerians, have been very disappointing and made it a caricature.
He said he preferred to step aside rather than remain a part of a system that no longer reflects the principles he stands for.
He did not however confirm which party he was heading to as next year’s governorship election draws closer.
