Over ten shops were razed by fire at Jos Terminus Market on Saturday night, just hours after traders had closed for the day.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze erupted around 10:00 pm, gutting shops that sold clothes and shoes. The incident comes three months after another section of the market was engulfed by fire.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene Sunday morning, observed extensive damage, with goods reduced to ashes. While the market authority could not immediately confirm the cause, some victims suspect an electrical fault.
Firefighters and emergency teams responded swiftly, averting what could have been a far more catastrophic disaster. Mr. Silas Lawrenzo, an eyewitness, said teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in coordination with Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Federal Fire Service, and Plateau State Fire Service, worked seamlessly to douse the flames.
“Their rapid and coordinated response prevented the fire from spreading further in this busy commercial hub,” Lawrenzo said.
Jos Terminus Market has recorded at least three fire incidents over the past year, collectively destroying millions of naira worth of property. Traders and residents have called for urgent measures to prevent future occurrences.
