The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) has dismissed claims that the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has authority to regulate professional boxing in the country, declaring such insinuations as unfounded and misleading.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Board maintained that there is no confusion within Nigeria’s boxing environment, stressing that it remains the only body legally recognized to regulate, control, and sanction professional boxing nationwide.
“The attention of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control has been drawn to insinuations that the Nigeria Boxing Federation, formerly known as the Nigeria Amateur Boxing Association (NABA), intends to assume regulatory authority over professional boxing in Nigeria. We categorically state that such claims are unfounded and should be disregarded,” the statement read.
The Board clarified that the mandate of the Nigeria Boxing Federation is strictly limited to amateur boxing, in line with global sporting structures, and does not extend to professional boxing.
President of the NBBofC, Dr. Rafiu Ladipo, warned that any attempt by another body to assume control of professional boxing could trigger administrative conflicts, weaken regulatory standards, and expose athletes to undue risks due to inadequate oversight.
He further cautioned promoters, managers, and boxers against engaging with unauthorized entities claiming regulatory powers, urging stakeholders to adhere strictly to established guidelines.
“We advise all promoters, managers, and boxers to remain vigilant and not be misled. The NBBofC remains fully committed to regulating and sanctioning professional boxing in Nigeria in line with international best practices,” the statement added.
Observers within the boxing community note that clarity in regulatory authority is crucial for ensuring athletes’ safety, maintaining fair competition, and safeguarding Nigeria’s reputation in the global boxing space.
The Board reiterated its resolve to continue overseeing professional boxing in the country, urging all stakeholders to comply with its directives.
