The Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, Adamawa State, has discharged successfully separated conjoined twins, marking another major milestone in the hospital’s medical history.

The twins were discharged during a brief ceremony attended by hospital officials, medical experts and family members, who described the feat as one of the institution’s most remarkable achievements.

The delicate surgery was carried out by a multidisciplinary team led by renowned surgeon and former Medical Director of the hospital, Professor Auwal Abubakar Muhammad, who was widely commended for the successful operation.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Ali Danburam, former Medical Director of MAUTH and Ptil Madagali, said the event was more than a routine hospital gathering, noting that it reflected the meeting point of medicine, humanity and faith.

He congratulated the parents and the surgical team, describing the procedure as one of the most delicate areas of pediatric surgery requiring precision, endurance and strong collaboration among specialists.

Danburam said the success was a product of the solid foundation laid by the institution’s early leadership, stressing that a culture of excellence, careful recruitment and continuous staff training made such achievements possible.

Lead surgeon, Prof. Auwal Muhammad Abubakar, disclosed that the twins spent over five months in the hospital under full financial exemption, with MAUTH covering all medical expenses from admission to surgery and recovery.

He said several departments, including radiology, nursing and patient relations, worked in close coordination, explaining that conjoined twin surgeries differ in complexity depending on the organs shared, such as the liver, heart, brain or kidneys.

Abubakar called on the Federal Government to invest more in healthcare through advanced medical equipment and improved budgetary allocations to strengthen specialist care across the country.

Chief Medical Director of MAUTH, Professor Adamu Bakari Girei, described the discharge ceremony as a celebration of sacrifice, teamwork and institutional excellence, while reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive specialist care locally.

Speaking for the family, Mallam Jibrin Yusuf thanked God and the hospital management for the care shown to the twins and their relatives.

Checks showed that MAUTH has now recorded three successful conjoined twin separation surgeries, while Prof. Abubakar has successfully handled six such operations in his career.
