No fewer than 720 prospective couples have undergone medical screening across 24 local government areas of Kano State ahead of the government’s planned mass wedding programme.
The screening exercise is part of preparations for the marriage of about 3,000 couples under the state-sponsored initiative aimed at supporting less-privileged residents.
Deputy Commander General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, , disclosed this on Tuesday, noting that the exercise is still ongoing.
He said prospective couples from metropolitan local government areas are expected to continue their screening on Wednesday at the office of the in Naibawa, adding that participants must present copies of their registration forms.
According to him, screening dates for couples from the remaining local government areas will be announced later.
The mass wedding programme, revived by the administration of , is designed to assist widows, divorcees, orphans and other vulnerable residents by covering marriage expenses and providing financial and household support.
The Hisbah Board, in collaboration with the state Ministry of Health, is conducting mandatory tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility, pregnancy, drug use and other sexually transmitted infections to ensure healthy and sustainable marriages.
