The Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, has urged political leaders, particularly members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to place the interests of the people above personal ambitions and political considerations.

Speaking on Tuesday while receiving members of the APC State Executive Committee on a courtesy visit to his palace in Calabar, the monarch stressed that peace, stability and sustainable development can only flourish where leaders embrace dialogue, mutual respect and responsible governance.

The revered traditional ruler commended the party leadership for recognising the importance of traditional institutions, noting that the palace remains a symbol of unity, peace and cultural heritage for the Efik Kingdom and Cross River State.

He charged political actors across the state to conduct their activities peacefully and in ways that promote harmony among the people, stressing that traditional institutions would continue to serve as custodians of peace, justice and societal values.

The Obong also expressed appreciation for the visit and assured the party leadership of the palace’s support for initiatives aimed at advancing the progress, stability and development of Cross River State.

Earlier, APC State Chairman, Christopher S. Eta, said the delegation visited the palace to pay homage to the revered throne and strengthen the relationship between the party and the traditional institution.

Eta described traditional rulers as critical stakeholders in promoting peace, stability and community development, adding that the visit offered an opportunity for the party to engage more closely with the palace and appreciate the role of traditional institutions in governance and the democratic process.

“We have come to identify with the throne, pay our respects to the palace and acknowledge the important role traditional institutions continue to play in maintaining peace, unity and stability within our communities. Their contributions to democracy and societal development cannot be overlooked,” he said.
