The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured a clean sweep in the Adamawa State local government elections, winning all 21 chairmanship seats and the 226 councillorship positions across the state.
Chairman of the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ADSIEC), Mohammed Umar Madagali, announced the results in Yola on Monday, declaring the PDP victorious in all the local government areas and wards where the elections were conducted.
Madagali explained that the results had earlier been declared by electoral officials at the various ward and local government collation centres, noting that the commission’s role was to formally announce the overall outcome.
He commended residents for their peaceful conduct during the exercise, describing elections as a democratic contest in which there must be winners and losers.
The ADSIEC chairman, however, disclosed that a minor disturbance was recorded in Numan Local Government Area after the declaration of results. According to a report presented by the area’s returning officer, Sani Ahmad, some election materials were allegedly destroyed by protesters in a few wards.
Despite the incident, the commission said the election process was largely peaceful across the state.
Eleven political parties initially indicated interest in participating in the polls, but only four — the PDP, All Progressives Congress (APC), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) — eventually fielded candidates for the election.
