Angry women from Gashish community in Plateau State on Monday destroyed a security checkpoint mounted by Operation Enduring Peace in Kassa, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, protesting renewed killings in the area.
The checkpoint, located along the Kassa highway, was set up to maintain law and order, but the women said it had failed to stop persistent attacks on their communities.
The protest followed Sunday night assaults on Hurum-Gashish, where gunmen killed four residents and injured five, as well as Bachi community, where two persons were reportedly killed.
The demonstrators, who turned out in large numbers, vandalised the facility, accusing security forces of failing to protect lives and property amid recurring violence.
They alleged that operatives had become ineffective, allowing armed groups to operate freely while residents remained exposed to attacks.

“We are tired of burying our children and husbands. The soldiers are here, yet we are still dying. If they cannot protect us, they should leave our land,” said a protester, Mercy Dachung.
Another demonstrator, Nancy Gyang, said security responses often come too late. “Each time we are attacked, we call them. They arrive after we have counted our losses. We removed that checkpoint because it has not stopped the attacks,” she said.
A women leader, Chundung Bot, said the community had lost confidence in the security presence, lamenting that farms and livelihoods were no longer safe.
The protesters called on government and security agencies to take urgent steps to end the violence and restore peace in the affected communities.
