Governor Bassey Otu has launched a free intra-state transportation scheme in Calabar as part of efforts to cushion the effects of rising inflation on residents.
The governor, who was represented at the launch by his deputy, Peter Odey, said the initiative was designed to ease the burden of transportation costs amid prevailing economic pressures.
The ‘Swert Season Transportation Sscheme’, unveiled in Calabar on Monday, includes free bus services within the city as well as boat rides to riverine communities such as Creek Town, Bakassi and other coastal areas.

Odey noted that the intervention was a continuation of the free transport programme first introduced in December 2025 to support movement during the Calabar Carnival festivities.
He explained that the expansion of the initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to providing relief for residents through targeted intra-state support measures.
According to him, the free transport services are also expected to ease commuter movement during the Easter season in Calabar and adjoining communities.
The deputy governor emphasised that the programme aligns with the government’s broader efforts to mitigate the impact of inflation and improve the welfare of citizens.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on General Duties, Ekpenyong Akiba, described the initiative as a reflection of the administration’s people-centred approach to governance.
Akiba added that the state government remains committed to implementing policies that address the economic and social challenges facing residents.
