Persistent Crises, Divisions Force Tambuwal to Leave PDP

Former Governor of Sokoto State and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing persistent internal crises and divisions within the party.
Tambuwal, who currently represents Sokoto South Senatorial District in the Senate, formally conveyed his decision in a resignation letter dated March 11, 2026.
The letter was addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Tambuwal/Shinfiri Ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
In the letter, the former governor explained that the lingering internal conflicts and leadership disagreements within the party had made it increasingly difficult for him to continue participating actively as a member.
According to him, the prolonged crisis rocking the party across the country has weakened the unity and cohesion that once defined the PDP.
“I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective from today,” Tambuwal stated in the letter.
He noted that the continued divisions within the party had undermined its direction and made it challenging for committed members to sustain their involvement.
Tambuwal, a prominent figure within the PDP and a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, did not immediately indicate his next political destination.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the PDP in Sokoto State, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, confirmed the development.
Sanyinnawal disclosed that Tambuwal handed over the resignation letter to party executives from his ward during a meeting.
“We were together with him tonight, and that was when I saw the party executives from his ward, which he later handed over the resignation letter to them,” he said.
