The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly circulating counterfeit naira notes at the popular cattle market in Lafia.
Hassan, said to be from Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) following credible intelligence.
Police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the suspect was caught while allegedly trading with fake ₦1,000 denomination notes at the market.
According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that Hassan had been using the counterfeit currency for transactions before he was intercepted by detectives.
Nansel disclosed that the suspect confessed during interrogation that the fake notes were supplied by an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza area of Lafia.
He added that efforts were ongoing to track and arrest the fleeing accomplice.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, urged traders, fuel station attendants, POS operators, motor park workers and other business owners to remain vigilant during daily transactions.
He advised residents to look out for signs of fake currency such as poor print quality, smaller note size, duplicated serial numbers and absence of visible security features.
The police spokesman said the suspect would be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations.
