A speech-impaired athlete, Jimmy Godslove, has expressed his ambition to compete in international athletics events after taking part in the just-concluded MTN CHAMPS Athletics Classic at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

The competition featured a number of athletes living with disabilities, including non-verbal participants who demonstrated determination and skill across several field events.

Godslove, believed to be in his mid-twenties, competed in the javelin throw and also participated in the shot put and discus events during the championship.

Speaking through his interpreter and trainer, Undie Thomas, himself physically challenged, the athlete said he has been training consistently and hopes to expand his participation beyond local competitions.

Godslove, an indigene of Cross River State, has taken part in several state-organised and community-level competitions in recent years, steadily building experience in the sport.

He said his goal is to compete on larger platforms internationally and appealed for sponsorship and support to help him realise the dream.

Thomas explained that he decided to register Godslove for the MTN CHAMPS Classic after observing his dedication and passion for athletics.

According to him, the young athlete has shown strong potential and determination, adding that he is committed to guiding him through training and competitions.

“Communication can be challenging at times because we rely on sign language, gestures and demonstrations during training,” Thomas said. “But with time we understand each other better, and that helps him perform well.”

He expressed confidence that with proper support and exposure, Godslove could win more medals and improve his status in athletics.
