The Niger State Police Command has released a 38-year-old man, Hamisu Abdullahi, after detaining him for five days over allegations of disrupting a government function in Suleja.

Abdullahi was reportedly arrested for shouting “No Water, No Light” during an official event held at the palace of the Emir of Suleja.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was taken into custody and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna.

According to Abiodun, Abdullahi was arrested on March 20, 2026, for alleged thuggery and attempting to disrupt activities during Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago’s Sallah visit to the area.

“One Hamisu Abdullahi, 38, of Suleja, was arrested and transferred to SCID Minna for suspected thuggery and attempt to disrupt government activities during the Governor’s Sallah visit,” he said.

He added that the suspect was later granted bail, noting that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

A family member, Haruna Abdullahi, confirmed that the suspect was released on Tuesday evening after spending five days in detention.

Abdullahi, an electrician and father of four, resides in Unguwan Bayi, Suleja. Sources said he was allegedly arrested on the orders of the governor after raising concerns about the lack of electricity and water supply during the Eid-el-Fitr celebration at the Emir’s palace.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the protest reflected the reality in Suleja, where residents have been grappling with persistent shortages of electricity and pipe-borne water.

“The truth is that there is no electricity and no pipe-borne water in Suleja. People are facing serious hardship, and the situation is becoming increasingly worrying,” the resident said.

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Bologi Ibrahim, said he was not aware of the incident.
