Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has inaugurated reconciliation committees for the three senatorial districts of the state as part of efforts to heal divisions arising from the recently concluded All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries.
The committees, covering the Southern, Central and Northern Senatorial Districts, were mandated to engage aggrieved party members, reconcile unsuccessful aspirants and their supporters, and strengthen party unity ahead of future political contests, including the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Otu stressed the need for inclusiveness, reconciliation and cohesion within the ruling party, describing the APC as one family whose collective interest should take precedence over individual ambitions.
He charged members of the committees to discharge their responsibilities with sincerity, fairness and commitment, noting that a united party remains critical to sustaining the APC’s electoral successes in the state.
In a move aimed at easing post-primary grievances, the governor announced the immediate refund of nomination fees paid by all National Assembly and State House of Assembly aspirants who participated in the party primaries.
For the Southern Senatorial District, former Minister of Culture and Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke, will chair the committee, with Hon. Ekpo Ekpo Bassey, Sir William Archibong, Prof. Paul Itari, Mrs. Kate Okon and Dr. David Okon serving as members, while Engr. Effiong Bassey will act as secretary.
The Central Senatorial District committee is headed by Chief Ebuta Ayuk, with Elder Bolaji Anani, Prof. Anim Ajake, Prof. John Inyang, Chief Barr. George Ekpungu and Prof. Alice Ekwu as members. Barr. Bassey Okim will serve as secretary.
Former Deputy Governor Larry Odey chairs the Northern Senatorial District committee. Other members include Chief Signor Omang Idiege, Chief Tony Udiandeye, Hon. Rita Ayim, Hon. Paddy Ogar and Hon. Maurice Evey, while Barr. Mike Aniah will serve as secretary.
Party stakeholders expressed optimism that the reconciliation exercise would strengthen internal harmony and position the APC for future electoral victories across Cross River State.
