President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Those affected by the directive include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, directors-general, and chief executive officers of federal government agencies, commissions, parastatals, and government-owned companies.
The order was conveyed in a circular issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries.
According to the circular, all categories of presidential political appointees intending to participate in party primaries or contest elective positions must vacate their offices within the stipulated deadline.
The circular was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Kana.
The directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws and preventing conflicts of interest as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
It also signals the commencement of political realignments within the administration as potential aspirants begin to position themselves ahead of party primaries.
Observers say the move could trigger a wave of resignations across key federal institutions in the coming weeks.
